Belgrade offers more than thousand sports facilities for almost all sports and activities. While football clearly reigns Serbia's sports scene, Belgrade also offers plenty of great alternatives, from basketball, tennis and golf to hunting, fishing, go karting and paintball. In Belgrade and its immediate surroundings you can catch a basketball game, cheer for your favorite football team, play a relaxing game of golf and more!

Belgrade has hosted several relatively major sporting events recently, including Eurobasket 2005, the 2005 European Volleyball Championship, the 2006 European Water Polo Championship, and the European Youth Olympic Festival 2007. Belgrade was the host city of the 2009 Summer Universiade chosen over the cities of Monterrey and Poznań. Belgrade Marathon Race is the largest and the most mass attended sporting event in Serbia.

Belgrade is also home to two football teams, Red Star (Crvena Zvezda) and Partizan, which have achieved remarkable success and have become famous all over the world along with their players. The matches between sports clubs Red Star and Partizan are considered to be the biggest city derbies, and the rivalry between their fans reflects all areas of everyday life.

With more than 1,000 sports facilities, amongst which special place have Belgrade Arena (seating capacity 20,000), swimming pool Tašmajdan, stadiums of FC Red Star and Partizan, Pionir Hall, Belgrade is ready to meet any sports challenge. Belgrade Arena became Belgrade’s trademark and one of the new symbols of the Serbian capital, as well as the place of interest for the visitors to our capital and the country. It is a facility that fully meets the latest standards and, together with the Prague Arena, it is at the highest technological level in Europe.

Belgrade has also given rise to several world class tennis players such as Jelena Jankovic, Ana Ivanovic and Novak Djokovic.

Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, has been host to many important sport events in its history.
