Additional suggestions for a day trip from Belgrade
Natural attractions and ethnographic restaurants are not the only choices for one-day excursions from Belgrade. Some people are not so crazy about nature. And that’s OK.
If you like the city atmosphere but not the Belgrade crowd, then a trip to Novi Sad or Sremski Karlovci is the right thing for you! These cities and their surroundings have a lot to offer.
A day trip to Novi Sad can be an enjoyable and educational sightseeing tour from Belgrade. You can reach it in an hour by car. The first place most visitors go to is the Petrovaradin Fortress. Climb the stairs to the Petrovaradin Clock Tower from where you will have a breathtaking view of the city.
Exit festival is also held at the fort every summer. This alone can be an excellent reason to visit Novi Sad for a day.
After visiting the Petrovaradin Fortress, take a stroll around the city center and enjoy the architecture. See the Name of Mary Church with the 72-meters high bell tower. There are more remarkable buildings, including the Town Hall and the Matica Srpska building. You can also have coffee at one of the many cafes or restaurants in the pedestrian area.
Novi Sad also has the most well-maintained beach on the Danube, called the Štrand. It’s quite popular during the summer.
When visiting Novi Sad, you can also stop by Sremski Karlovci. This can be another fun sightseeing tour from Belgrade. This small town has many objects of historical and cultural importance. See the Patriarchal Court and the Gymnasium of Karlovci, the oldest secondary school in Serbia. The Four Lions Fountain on the promenade is also fascinating. It was built at the end of the 18th century.
The Sremski Karlovci hosts festivals such as the Kuglof Festival and Grožđenbal – the festival of grapes and wine. Make sure to try kuglof cake and Bermet, an aromatic dessert wine.
Although we said no more nature, we have to mention Fruska Gora. It’s practically around the corner from Sremski Karlovci. Also, only 4 km from Sremski Karlovci is Stražilovo, a well-known picnic area that is a part of the Fruska Gora National Park. In addition to many hiking trails, there are also several monasteries you can visit. For wine lovers, Fruska Gora is something special, as there are many wineries.
