The holiday season in Belgrade is exciting, and the Christmas market has already started. The Serbian capital is a perfect place to enjoy the magic of holidays. Although Christmas in Serbia is aligned to the Julian calendar, meaning Christmas is on January 7, the festive season starts earlier.

It begins in December with an event called Belgrade Winter and the traditional Open Heart Square. After that, other performances for children and adults follow. Even after the New Year’s eve, you can feel the spirit of holidays in Belgrade throughout January.

If you don’t know how to spend the holiday season in Belgrade, or just want to cheer yourself up for the holidays, maybe we can help you with that. We have prepared a list of the most important New Year‘s events in Belgrade.

Open Heart Square

During December and January, Republic Square is transformed into the Open Heart Square. The program on weekdays will be held from 4 pm to 7 pm. On weekends, the program will start at noon and run until 6 pm. Kids can look forward to meeting clowns, magicians, as well as enjoying different theater plays.

When it comes to adults, they will not be neglected either. This Belgrade Christmas market can rival any other in Europe. Colorful wooden huts will be selling Christmas souvenirs and delicacies. Also, various fairs will take place, including wine, cheese, and honey fair.

Belgrade winter

This year, various performances are a part of the Belgrade Winter event. In addition to Open Heart Square, an ice-rink on Republic Square and an open-air cinema on Nikola Pasic Square are among the main events during the festive period. Like every year, by St Sava Temple, people can join public lighting of an oak branch called the badnjak for Christmas. In fact, various performances are planned on as many as 18 locations in the city. The Belgrade Winter will run until February 15, and all events will be free of charge.

Winter Equipment Fair

Those interested in winter sports, as well as those looking for first-minute travel arrangements, can visit the Expo-Zim, winter equipment fair. The largest manufacturers, importers, and distributors of winter sports equipment will be there. Also, winter sports fans can exchange and service their props.

Leading tourist agencies, hotels, and resorts also have their place on the fair. They will offer visitors favorable travel arrangements. The event runs from December 5 to December 8 in Hall 4 of the Belgrade Fair. The ticket price is 350 RSD.

The days of Amadeus

You can spend the holiday season in Belgrade enjoying classical music. Three concerts will be held in the ceremony room of the Amadeus Music School during December. The first in the series is an interactive story about Mozart’s music time machine. The youngest students of this school will demonstrate their skills by playing the violin, cello, piano, and guitar.

The Concertology Academy is a project of Amadeus High School students. The last concert in the series called The Evening of Film Music is, in fact, a musical collage of film and classical music. The students of this school will be in charge of this performance.

New Year’s concerts at Kolarac and Guarnerius

Several concerts will also take place in the Concert Hall of the Kolarac Foundation during December. Among them are two New Year’s concerts of the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra, and a performance by the Serbian Folklore Ensemble Kolo. In addition, RTS Children’s Choir will perform the show called How to listen to music.

Guarnerius Art Centre will be organizing the Traditional Belgrade Concert of Jovan Kolundzija for the 13th consecutive year. This year the concert will be held at the Belgrade City Hall. Besides, the “Faculty of Music and Guarnerius are rewarding” concert series continues during December, featuring the best students of FMU.

Holiday events in shopping malls

You can also feel the festive atmosphere if you decide to visit a shopping mall. During the holiday season in Belgrade, in addition to discounts, you can enjoy a variety of New Year’s events. For example, at the Usce Shopping Center, kids can learn all about snowflakes.

If you want a picture with Santa, visit the Ada Mall. At the Stadium Shopping Mall, children can participate in various workshops, watch plays, or write letters to Santa. And in front of the Rajiceva Shopping Center, children and adults alike will be able to get down the snow slide.

New Year’s Fair

Every year, in mid-December, New Year’s Festival is held at the Belgrade Fair. It features an indoor amusement park, and it’s quite popular during the holiday season in Belgrade.

This year it will be in halls 1, 2, and 4. Although earlier this event was exclusively for children, now the concept has changed. With new activities, adults will be able to enjoy Belgrade New Year’s Festival too. Admission to this event is free.

Fairytale Square

Fairytale Square is also a part of the Belgrade Winter. Every day children and all the others can enjoy our folk fairy tales, puppet shows, and operas for kids. The entertainment program will also include concerts, presentations, and workshops. Fairytale Square is in front of the Vuk Culture Institution, in Kralja Aleksandra Boulevard. The event will run till December 30, and the entry is free for all visitors.

Christmas Square

The festive spirit spreads on the square in front of the Radisson Collection Hotel, Old Mill Belgrade, at Vojvode Misica Boulevard. That is another Christmas market in Belgrade in addition to the one on Republic Square. This event, called Christmas Square, will run until January 8. The program for kids ages 6-12 is on Sundays from noon to 7 pm. Children can play games and participate in workshops as well as enjoy concerts. Children can participate for free, but the number of kids per workshop is limited. Besides, visitors can enjoy holiday specialties in small wooden huts.

New Year’s Eve on Belgrade squares and in the clubs

The celebration of 2020 New Year’s Eve in Belgrade will be organized on the square too. This year, the celebration will last two days – on December 30 and 31. Popular performers of newly composed music, as well as hip-hop music, will entertain the visitors. Entertainment artists will do their best to create a spectacle to remember.

On December 30, several performers, led by Rasta, Cobi, Senidah, and MC Stojan, will perform at this venue. The main music star at the farewell from 2019 will be Lepa Brena. On the same evening, Maja Berovic will perform, as well as the Piloti band with Kiki Lesendric.

You can also spend the peak of the holiday season in Belgrade at one of the popular clubs or hotels. The best place to enjoy the holiday season in Belgrade and celebrate depends solely on your affinities. Many famous musicians and singers will perform at Belgrade hotels and restaurants. Thus, Marija Serifovic will sing at the Holiday Inn (Belexpo Center), and Jelena Karleusa at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Ceca Raznatovic and Sloba Radanovic will perform at the Majdan Hotel. Alexandra Prijovic will take care of the excellent atmosphere on New Year’s Eve at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Belgrade.

You can expect a great atmosphere at the capital’s clubs. The City Hall club features Rada Manojlovic and Boban Rajovic, while Dada Bubamara and Darko Lazic will be performing at the Hollywood Ledine’s restaurant.

Open Heart Street

This event begins on January 1, 2020, at noon. The music and entertainment program will be in front of Atelier 212, Radio Belgrade, Stari Grad Municipality, as well as in Skadarlija. It is a humanitarian event, and its slogan this time is: My Belgrade has a heart.

Like every year, children and adults will be able to join the charity by buying clown noses. Besides, they can enjoy jugglers, clowns, acrobats, and magicians. This event is also a part of the Belgrade Winter.

As you can see, the holiday season in Belgrade is eventful and fun. Colorful Belgrade Christmas market, various concerts, and fairs are just one part of the magic. The festive spirit and high probability of snow are the other. Belgrade is an ideal place to enjoy the winter and a New Year’s celebration.
